A sleep study, more formally known as a polysomnogram, is performed to diagnose various sleep disorders. A sleep study records your brain waves, heart rate and breathing as you sleep. It also monitors your eye movements, limb movements and oxygen in your blood. Sleep studies that are performed in a sleep facility are the most reliable. The thoroughness of the sensors that are used during an overnight test can detect or rule a variety of sleep disorders, including obstructive sleep apnea, central sleep apnea, narcolepsy and periodic limb movement disorder. This data will help your doctor make a diagnosis and treatment plan.
So, sleeping away from home isn't your thing? That's okay, we understand!
Many of our patients are able to test from the comfort of their own home. Through the use of a portable device, your sleep is able to be monitored. The equipment is minimal and easy to connect. When ready to sleep, the patient turns on the device and falls asleep as normal. After the test, the data is analyzed by a registered sleep technologist and then sent to a board certified sleep physician for review. We have reusable and disposable home sleep testing devices.
If any of the following apply to you, a home sleep study is not recommended. Please always consult your physician first.
The Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT) is used to measure how alert you are during the day. It shows whether or not you are able to stay awake for a defined period of time. This is an indicator of how well you are able to function and remain alert in quiet times of inactivity. The multiple sleep latency test (MSLT) tests for excessive daytime sleepiness by measuring how quickly you fall asleep in a quiet environment during the day. Also known as a daytime nap study, the MSLT is the standard tool used to diagnose narcolepsy and idiopathic hypersomnia.
There are several forms of positive airway pressure (PAP) therapy. The most common is CPAP. CPAP stands for continuous positive airway pressure. CPAP therapy involves wearing a special mask during sleep that facilitates normal breathing for sleep apnea patients. All forms of PAP therapy keep your airway open as you sleep.
